These are your "2019-20 Scholar Athletes of the Year". Each of these athletes have met and exceeded our qualifications of 3.0GPA or higher, excelling at their chosen sport and contributing to their community through community service.
Israel Benjamin(4.7gpa, Class 2020) one of the top running backs in the state was injured early during his senior year. His JR year he was All Region, All State, All District, running for 1,700 yards (9.5 ypc) and 27 touchdowns. Future goal is to be the NFL Commissioner after his NFL playing career. Isaac Davis (4.1gpa, Class 2020) is one of the top 400m runners in the nation. He owns a room full of national, state and city trophies and medals. Cameron Nash (4.5gpa, Class 2020) is a great lock down corner. He finished the year with 34 tackles, 9 pass deflections and 1 fumble recovery. He was a candidate for 4A defensive back of the year and selected as one of the Arizona Interscholastic Association's top student athletes of the year. He was also selected as Regional Scholar Athlete by the Watkins Award Committee. He has decided to give his service to the Army and will be attending West Point while playing defensive back for the Army team. Elijah Ervin (4.0gpa, Class 2020) a big play receiver that had a great senior year with 1,459 yards, 18 touchdowns and 23yds per catch. He was also selected as Regional Scholar Athlete by the Watkins Award Committee. His goal is to get a degree in Engineer. Andrei Mayberry (3.8gpa, Class 2020) is 205 pound wrecking ball. He finished his senior season with 66 tackles, 5 interceptions and 1 sack. He will get his business degree while playing football. Kobe Rome( 3.9gpa, Class 2020) is a great all around athlete. He played defensive back, punt and kickoff returner. He finished the season with 39 tackles, 2 interceptions, 9 pass deflections and 2 touchdowns. He has committed to play defensive back for Fort Hays State University. He will be studying Engineering. Cameron Khan(3.2gpa, Class 2020) was a top tennis players at Hamilton High school. He was a very quick player that could cover the entire court. He was offered scholarships but none of the universities had a good nursing programs. He decided to take his tennis talents to Mesa Community College to work on his skills. He will be leaving Mesa Community to play tennis on the Division I or II level. His goal is to get his degree in Nursing.
Devin Graham (3.2gpa, Class 2020) is a graduate of Gila Ridge High. He finished his senior year with 89 tackles, 2 interceptions and 2 touchdowns. He was 1st team All Region offensive line and defensive line. He was also 1st team All Region in Track in Field as a thrower. He is majoring in Kinesiology while playing offensive line for the football team. He is our 1st scholar athlete from the Yuma area.
Scholar Athlete Khalil Cooper(3.6gpa, Class 2020) is a our first graduate of San Tan Valley. He finished his high school career being selected 2nd Team All region as a linebacker and a running back. He rushed for 1,595yds with 11tds and 7 games that he rushed over 100yds. As a linebacker he had 68 solo tackles, 107 assisted tackles and 6.5 sacks. He is passionate about helping organizations like, Adopt a Highway and Feed My Children. Jason Adkinson(3.3gpa, Class 2020) was a solid cornerback at Ironwood High. He had no issue being on the island by himself one on one with the other teams best receiver. His speed and 6'2 frame always gave him the advantage. He also excelled on the track team running the 4x100, 4x200, and the triple jump. Chaz Castillo-Wilson (4.42gpa, Class 2020) when he came to us as a high school freshman was our first ice hockey player. As he became an upperclassman he gave up on ice hockey and focused on his second sport which was golf. He was offered scholarships to play golf but wanted to focus all his attention on his getting his engineering degree. He is now attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Keyshon Upchurch(3.6gpa, Class 2020) was a 2 sport scholar athlete at Seton Catholic Prep. He was a standout on the football field playing Safety and Runningback. He averaged 4.8yds per carry with 2 TDs. On the basketball court as s point guard he averaged 8.7pts per game. Keyshon is playing Safety on the Division III Simpson College Football Team in Iowa.
Byron Brown(4.28gpa) was one of the top basketball players in southern Arizona. He was ranked at #40 in the state. He was also the 520 Sport Talk Player of the Year. He did community service with the Alzheimer's Walk, school fundraisers and a team clean up. Byron will spend one year at the Air Force Academy Prep and then he will move on to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Yaya Badiallo(3.3gpa, 3.3gpa) was team Captain of his cross country and track and field team. His specialty was the 5K, with a personal best of 19.30. He did his community service with the Red Cross. after graduating from Catalina High he started working on his degree in medicine at the University of Arizona. His goal is to become a pediatrician and help children in his homeland of West Africa
